The Paycheck Reset: A Free 8-Module Budgeting Course

The Paycheck Reset is our free budgeting course for anyone who wants to get ahead of their money instead of always chasing it. Eight short modules take you from “where did it all go?” to a working budget, a starter emergency fund, and a real plan to pay down debt. There is no cost, no credit check, and no signup wall — and the worksheet in each module is yours to keep and reuse every month.

Work through it at your own pace. Each module has a short read and a worksheet you can fill in on paper or in a notes app. If you are currently juggling multiple payday loans, this course pairs well with our help on the money side — but the course itself asks nothing of you except your attention.

Module 1: Know Your Numbers

You cannot fix what you have not measured. This first module is a snapshot: exactly how much comes in, and exactly how much goes out, in a normal month. Most people are surprised — usually because small recurring charges add up to more than they guessed. Pull up your last full month of bank and card statements and write down every source of income and every fixed bill.

Worksheet 1

  • Total monthly take-home income (all sources): $______
  • Rent or mortgage: $______
  • Utilities (power, water, gas, internet, phone): $______
  • Transportation (car payment, gas, transit, insurance): $______
  • Loan and card minimums: $______
  • Subscriptions and memberships: $______
  • Everything left over (your starting margin): $______

Module 2: Track Every Dollar

Fixed bills are the easy part. The money that quietly disappears is variable spending — food, coffee, rideshares, impulse buys. For one week, write down every single purchase the moment you make it. Not to judge it, just to see it. A week of honest tracking tells you more about your habits than a month of guessing.

Worksheet 2

  • Keep a running list for 7 days: date, what you bought, amount.
  • At the end of the week, group purchases into 4-5 categories.
  • Circle the category that surprised you most.
  • Note one purchase you would happily skip next week.

Module 3: Build Your Baseline Budget

Now you have real numbers, so you can build a plan instead of a wish. A simple starting framework is 50/30/20: about half your take-home for needs, up to a third for wants, and the rest toward savings and debt. It is a starting point, not a rule — if your needs run higher, adjust. The goal is that every dollar has a job before the month begins.

Worksheet 3

  • Needs (housing, utilities, food, transport, minimums): $______
  • Wants (dining out, entertainment, extras): $______
  • Savings and extra debt payoff: $______
  • Do the three add up to your income? If not, adjust wants first.

Module 4: Break the Payday Cycle

If a payday loan is rolling over every two weeks, the fees are the trap — not the original balance. Each rollover buys a little time and costs another fee, and the principal never moves. The way out is to stop feeding new fees into the cycle and attack the balance directly. That may mean a tight month, a side income, or getting help restructuring what you owe so it becomes one manageable payment.

Worksheet 4

  • List each payday loan: lender, balance, fee per cycle, due date.
  • Add up the fees you paid over the last 3 months. That is the cost of the cycle.
  • Pick the smallest balance to target first for a quick win.
  • If the fees are more than you can outrun, note it — that is when outside help makes sense.

Module 5: Build a Starter Emergency Fund

Most payday loans start with an emergency — a car repair, a medical bill, a short paycheck. A small cushion breaks that pattern. You do not need three months of expenses to start; you need enough to handle the next surprise without borrowing. Even $500 set aside changes how the next bad week goes.

Worksheet 5

  • Starter goal: $500 (or one month of essentials if you can reach it).
  • Weekly amount you can set aside: $______
  • Where it lives: a separate account you will not touch by accident.
  • Automate the transfer for the day after payday.

Module 6: Tackle Debt With a Payoff Plan

Two proven methods: the snowball (smallest balance first, for momentum) and the avalanche (highest interest rate first, for math). Both work — the best one is the one you will actually stick with. List your debts, pick a method, and throw every extra dollar from your budget at one target while paying minimums on the rest.

Worksheet 6

  • List every debt: balance, interest rate, minimum payment.
  • Snowball order (smallest to largest balance) or avalanche order (highest to lowest rate)?
  • Extra dollars per month to add to the target debt: $______
  • When the first debt is gone, roll its payment into the next one.

Module 7: Automate and Simplify

Willpower is unreliable; systems are not. Automate the payments and transfers you have already decided on so the plan runs without a monthly fight. Line up due dates near payday, set autopay for minimums so nothing slips, and keep spending money in a separate account from bills.

Worksheet 7

  • Turn on autopay for every minimum payment.
  • Schedule your savings transfer for the day after payday.
  • Ask billers to move due dates close to when you get paid.
  • Keep one account for bills, one for spending.

Module 8: Keep It Going

A budget is not a one-time event; it is a monthly habit. Once a month, sit down for fifteen minutes and compare your plan to what actually happened. Adjust, celebrate the wins, and set the next month. Over a few cycles this stops feeling like work and starts feeling like control.

Worksheet 8

  • Book a recurring 15-minute “money date” once a month.
  • Compare planned vs. actual for each category.
  • Move the difference — surplus to savings or debt, shortfall trimmed from wants.
  • Write down one thing that went right. Momentum matters.
